Celeste Kirk opened the front door and smiled when she saw her daughter and her husband standing there.  “You’d better come in then.”

Janice hugged her mother.  “I’m so sorry I couldn’t drop by earlier.”

“You had a lot to go through.”  Celeste replied.  “Now are you going to introduce me to this charming gentleman or not?”

“Mother, this is Dr Leonard Horatio McCoy.  You remember him, surely.”

“Hello Mrs Kirk.”  Bones said to Janice’s mother.

“It was six years ago.  You’d just been posted to the Enterprise.  I think you all dropped by for a visit.  It was shortly after George moved to Deneva.  Your sister and her husband are about and Peter is supposed to be here helping me set the table for dinner.”

“I’ll help you with that.”  Janice said to her mother.  “Leonard can go and meet the rest of the family.”  She waited until Leonard had left.  “You know what you said about grandchildren?”

“You’re pregnant?”

“It’s only been a week but the test I took said that I was.  I want to be certain before I tell Leonard.  You know how cranky doctors get.”

“I always wanted a daughter who married a doctor, my arthritis is playing up again.”  Celeste put her hand on her daughter’s tummy.  “I remember when you were growing inside of me.  All three of my children, you were all so special to me.  It’s still so hard to believe that my precocious son has become such a wonderful daughter.”

“It took me almost six months of intense therapy to accept the change and fully embrace the change as a positive factor in my life.  I have a husband who loves me, a child on the way and a promotion that allows me to spend time here on Earth.  I just wish that damned war was over but it was necessary.  The Romulans have a terrible secret weapon and now it’s only a matter of time before they become desperate enough to use it again. 

“Married life can be a wonderful time in a woman’s life.  Some of the best years of my life were spent with your father before we had you, your bother and sister.”

“It’s still odd, getting used to being called Mrs. McCoy.”

“It took me years to get used to taking your father’s name, but I never let him know that.”

“Besides the Romulans want Captain Kirk dead, not Admiral McCoy.”  Janice replied.  “Once again fate and good luck have stepped in to help me.”

“You’ll have to tell Peter some of your stories.  He’s been going on about joining up.”

“Sam never wanted that life for him.”  Janice replied.  “Maybe his Aunt Janice can tell him a few horror stories.”

"If anyone can tell him the truth about war I think it's you."

Janice nodded.  “Maybe, mom, maybe.”
